Pilates offers many benefits for seniors.
Pilates is a well-known core strength building exercise. A weak core can create many issues, such as poor posture, lower back pain, and an increased risk of injury. Without adequate core strength, we are also more likely to have balance issues, especially as we age. The primary focus of Pilates is back and core strength exercises. Improved mobility, balance, and strength are among the most valuable benefits. That’s because exercises that strengthen the core and support the spine facilitate better balance and increase range of motion. However, Pilates isn’t just about training your core.
Another benefit of Pilates is joint strengthening and flexibility. Pilates balances strength with flexibility, providing maximum stability and range of motion. Strength, balance, flexibility, and mobility naturally diminish with age. Pilates is one of the best ways to build and maintain great physical form as you age.
Since Pilates uses weight-bearing exercises to strengthen muscles, it also prevents osteoporosis and/or osteopenia. Anyone who experiences the effects of diminished bone density will benefit from Pilates because of the strength gained in the core, spine, legs, and joints. This also decreases the risk of fractures, which can increase with age.
Pilates exercises are also ideal for anyone who stands for long hours, and for people who engage in repetitive movements regularly. It helps recalibrate and realign the whole body for optimal functioning. Whether you’re looking for the best core-strengthening workout, want to increase your flexibility, strength, and mobility, or joint strength, or simply want a workout that doesn’t hurt your back, you’ll find all of that and more at my Pilates studio in Whitby, Ontario!
Postpartum Pilates
Are you looking for a way to get fit and restore your core strength after childbirth? Pilates is an excellent post-pregnancy exercise for new mothers.
Pilates workouts help strengthen and heal the entire body, with a focus on building core strength. Postpartum Pilates offers great recovery from the physical trauma of childbirth.
There are three common issues that women experience after childbirth: pelvic floor dysfunction, diastasis recti, and joint injuries. Pilates addresses these issues and helps heal and strengthen your body safely and effectively.
Pilates for Pelvic Floor Dysfunction:
Pelvic floor dysfunction is one of the most common conditions women experience after childbirth. Sometimes, it can last for years. Pilates addresses this issue by combining low-intensity pelvic floor muscle workouts with synchronized breathing and mindful movements. These methods work together to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles. Pilates practice also helps realign the pelvis after childbirth.
Pilates for Diastasis Recti:
Diastasis occurs naturally during pregnancy when the abdominal muscles separate. These muscles can remain in this state for months after the baby is born. Pilates provides some of the most effective exercises for repairing this muscle separation.
Pilates for Joint Injuries:
Postpartum mothers are more likely to experience joint injuries because of the hormone relaxin, which initially loosens the muscles but remains in the body for some time after birth. Pilates exercises provide the strength and stability that your joints need after childbirth.
Pilates for Injury Recovery & Chronic Pain:
Pilates is a great exercise for stabilizing joints, muscles, and other tissues because of the therapeutic nature of its movements. Pilates workouts can be modified to be as gentle as necessary while the injured area is healing. As healing progresses, movements can gradually increase in intensity until normal movements are restored. Regular Pilates practice strengthens the joints and tissues without aggravating the injury.
These targeted movements also increase circulation in the affected areas, which boosts the body’s ability to heal naturally by producing more analgesics and anti-inflammatory compounds.
Pilates also teaches us to be more aware of our movements through breathwork and concentration. This system of mindful movements is a wonderful way to bring you into a calm, centered mental space, which is more conducive to healthy movement patterns.
Pilates for Spinal Health and Wellness:
Pilates is one of the most effective ways to maintain maximum spinal health and wellness because it strengthens the core muscles that keep the spine strong and flexible, as well as the joints and other tissues.
If you have had a back injury, experience back pain, are recovering from surgery, or if you simply want to maintain a healthy spine, Pilates is one of the most effective ways to establish and maintain spinal health and wellness.
Pilates is arguably the best core strength exercise out there. The primary focus of Pilates is core strengthening, so it is naturally geared toward spinal health and wellness. Having a strong core makes you less prone to back injuries while training your body for optimal spinal alignment. A well-aligned spine corrects poor posture naturally. Through the core-strengthening exercises Pilates provides, the spine is re-educated to optimal function, releasing back stiffness and allowing the body to move freely with less pain.
However, Pilates is not only about back and core strength exercises. It is a whole-body method that repairs and strengthens joints and tissues while also restoring appropriate movement patterns to all body parts. Pilates is an effective way to heal injured joints, muscles and other tissues, providing optimal healing for people who have had injuries and experience pain.
Pilates with SoundHealing Combo
Pilates workouts allow you to tune into your physical body while cultivating endurance, strengthening the core, and training your body to find balance and ease in movement. Pilates is a meditative movement, and sound healing with tuning forks is the energetic equivalent. The healing frequencies of tuning forks facilitate a connection with your inner emotional core, allowing your mind and body to come into resonance with vibrations of optimal health and well-being, strengthening the connection with higher levels of your being, and expanding your energetic field.
Combining a Pilates workout with sound healing is like taking a trip to the gym and the spa at the same time. It’s a healing session and a rejuvenating workout that brings your body and mind into coherence with one another; a recalibration of the mind-to-body connection.
I believe these two techniques work together to create absolute alignment of our physical body and electrical vibrational body. It is healing from the inside out, encompassing one’s physical and energetic self.
My intention for these combined sessions is for my clients to walk away feeling grounded and at ease within their bodies, while feeling lifted and expanded energetically, and deeply connected to themselves
